Volleyball Falls to Nor’easters, 3-1

STANDISH, ME – University of New England (4-4) defeated Saint Joseph's (7-3) by a 3-1 score in a non-conference volleyball match at the Harold Alfond Center Thursday evening. Monks middle blocker Sarah Hawkes '13 (Pownal, ME) recorded 16 digs, nine kills and four total blocks in a losing effort.

The Nor'easters required extra play to defeat the Monks in the opening set, 28-26, before the hosts topped the visitors, 25-23, in the second set to even up the score at one apiece. UNE rebounded by winning the final two sets, 25-14 and 25-23. For the Monks, the loss snaps a five game winning streak.

SJC setter Kiah Begley '13 (Berwick, ME/Saint Thomas Aquinas) dealt 33 assists with 13 digs and Brooke Dyer '14 (Lebanon, ME/Saint Thomas Aquinas) registered 10 digs and six kills against the Nor'easters. Sarah Coffey '14 (Hanover, MA) added eight digs and six kills and Devon Masse '14 (Hudson, NH) belted eight kills on the night.

Nor'easters middle hitter Paige Curran '13 (Chelmsford, MA) posted a match-high 10 kills with six total blocks, while Kirsta Adie '14 (Tyngsboro, MA) collected a match-best 17 digs in the UNE triumph. Maria Kuehl '14 (Middleton, NH) had 28 assists, 14 digs and three aces while Abby Davis '12 (Somersworth, NH) notched 14 digs and seven assists for the visitors.

Saint Joseph's will take on Lasell and Pine Manor in a GNAC tri-match at Lasell College Saturday beginning at 12:00 PM, while UNE is set to host a TCCC tri-match Saturday against Endicott and Regis.
