Eagles Down Monks, 3-0

NASHUA, NH - Saint Joseph's (8-5) suffered a 3-0 loss to Daniel Webster (5-2) in a non-conference volleyball match on Wednesday evening. Sarah Hawkes '13 (Pownal, ME) registered a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs with a .421 hitting percentage in the loss.

For the Eagles, sophomore Chelsey Crawford (Westfield, Mass.) knocked down a match-high 16 kills while fellow sophomore Jenny Finneran (Barnstead, N.H.) added five kills and four total blocks. Crawford, the reigning New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Week, hit .560 overall with just two errors in 25 chances and the Eagles racked up 14 service aces as part of the 25-21, 25-15, 25-15 victory.

Junior Caitlyn DePierro (Chelmsford, Mass.) dished out 21 assists and a team-high nine digs for the winners, while junior Erin Desmarais (Milford, N.H.) knocked down eight aces at the service line.

Freshman Sarah Coffey (Hanover, Mass.) added nine kills and six digs. Sophomore Kiah Begley (Berwick, Maine) notched 25 assists, three aces and five digs for the Monks.

The opening set was a back-and-forth battle throughout and featured seven ties, the latest coming at 16-all before the Eagles broke through with an important 4-0 run sparked by two aces from Desmarais and a Crawford kill.

St. Joe's would pull within 21-19 on an Eagle error but an Emily Travis (Somerset, Mass.) kill would later close out the 25-21 win.

Two kills from Crawford and another from Desmarais helped DWC open an 8-2 lead to start the second, before four Eagle unforced errors helped close the gap to 9-8.

But SJC was hurt by three quick attack errors and a kill from Travis to allow Daniel Webster to open a 16-9 lead and the lead grew to as many as 11 (23-12) thanks to an ace from Eagle Brier Temple (Concord, N.H.) and a Crawford kill, and the Eagles cruised to the 10-point win.

Tied at 8-8 in the third, sophomore Sam Hill (Hudson, N.H.) knocked down three of her four kills in the span of five points as part of a 6-0 run and the Eagles would close out the 25-15 win with Crawford final kill of the night.

The Eagles are off until next Tuesday when they visit Suffolk University for a regional matchup beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Saint Joseph's hosts Simmons College in a GNAC meeting and Western Connecticut State on Saturday in a regional trimatch beginning at 11:00 a.m.
