Monks Breeze Past Eagles, 3-0

STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph's (10-3, 3-1 GNAC) defeated Daniel Webster College (9-3, 0-0 NECC), 3-0, in a non-conference volleyball match at the Harold Alfond Center on Thursday evening. Sarah Hawkes '13 (Pownal, Maine) tallied nine kills, 12 digs and three solo blocks in the triumph.

For the Monks, Kiah Begley '13 (Berwick, Maine/St. Thomas Aquinas) dealt a match-high 26 assists, Kristin Palladino '14 (Exeter, N.H.) registered nine kills, 10 digs and three service aces, Brooke Dyer '14 (Lebanon, Maine/St. Thomas Aquinas) contributed eight kills, and Jordan Pelczar '12 (Meredith, N.H.) chipped in with eight digs.

For the Eagles, Chelsey Crawford '13 (Westfield, Mass.) belted a match-best 10 kills, Caitlyn DePierro '12 (Billerica, Mass.) notched 22 assists and six digs, and Amanda Wilson '12 (Merrimack, N.H.) added 12 digs in a losing effort.  The setback brought a three-game winning streak to a halt for the visitors.

St. Joe's held commanding advantages in kills (37-24), assists (31-23), aces (11-2), digs (44-33) and attack percentage (.175 - .098) in the victory. The Eagles committed 15 attack errors, 11 service errors and 11 reception errors in defeat.

With the win St. Joe's improves to 2-3 in the history of the series with Daniel Webster, a team the Monks had not defeated since the 1991 season.

Saint Joseph's has not started the season with a 10-3 record since 1997. The Monks won a Maine Athletic Conference (MAC) championship that fall.

Hawkes now has 670 career kills and is just four shy of surpassing Hillary Collyer '04 as the Monks' all-time kills leader. Collyer netted 673 kills in 57 matches (279 sets), while Hawkes has recorded her near-record total in 74 matches (252 sets) over two-plus seasons.

Hawkes is also nearing the program's career records for digs and solo blocks as the junior middle blocker has netted 677 digs and 116 rejections during her career thus far. Helene Liaci ''05 ranks as the team-leader in digs with 718, while Collyer carries the block record with 123.

Saint Joseph's will participate in a GNAC tri-match with Lasell College (7-8, 1-1 GNAC) at Simmons College (11-4, 3-0 GNAC) on Saturday. The Monks face the host Sharks at 11:00 AM and the Lasers at 1:00 PM. Daniel Webster will host conference-rival Regis College on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
