Volleyball Defeats Gordon, Improves to 6-1

STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph's College (6-1) defeated Gordon College (3-4), 3-1, in a non-conference volleyball match at the Harold Alfond Center on Tuesday evening. Sophomore middle blocker Felicia Wachowiak (Milton, N.H.) notched a match-high 12 kills in the victory.

Saint Joseph's, coming off an SJC Autumn Invitational Championship over the weekend, looked to maintain the momentum gained from an outstanding performance on Saturday. The Monks did just that, as the hosts posted a 25-10 opening-set triumph over the Fighting Scots and seemed poised to roll to the team's sixth victory of the season.

Gordon had other plans however, as the visitors came to life in the second set, taking advantage of eight Saint Joseph's attack errors en route to evening up the match by way of a 25-19 win. The remainder of the evening proved to be a battle, as both clubs would produce 20 more points in the final two sets, but the Monks – with the help of some clutch service aces from Erica Russi (Debary, Fla.), Shadai Gosselin (Somersworth, N.H.) and Victoria Huntley (Ellsworth, Maine) – managed to reach 25 points first in both sets en route to a 3-1 win.

For the Monks, Gosselin recorded six kills, six aces and a team-high 19 digs, Huntley added three aces and 13 digs, Mariah Hebert (Biddeford, Maine) produced 20 assists and Abbie McPhee (Epping, N.H.) chipped in with 10 digs. Senior Holly Bannister (Cumberland, Maine) contributed four block solos in the victory.

For the Fighting Scots, Lauren Kranyak tallied 10 kills, five aces and 17 digs, Jessica Burdick added six kills and eight digs, Maggie Risma scooped up a match-high 23 digs, and Hanna Swor contributed 25 assists, three kills, three aces and nine digs in a losing bid.

With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 3-10 versus Gordon College since the start of the 1991 campaign and has now defeated the Fighting Scots in consecutive meetings for the first time during the span. The Monks blanked Gordon, 3-0, on the road last fall.

Up next for Saint Joseph's is a home match versus Rhode Island College at the Alfond Center on Saturday at 11:00 AM. Gordon is set to host a non-conference tri-match with Bay Path College (11:00 AM) and Emmanuel College (3:00 PM) this Saturday.
