Monks, Coach Michal, Pick up First Victory

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (1-1) defeated Lesley University (2-3), 3-0 (25-13,25-22,25-15), in non-conference women's volleyball action at the Harold Alfond Center on Saturday morning.

THE LEAD

Saint Joseph's kicked off the match with eight unanswered points in the opening set en route to a 25-13 triumph and trailed by as many as six points before rallying to a 25-22 win in the second set. The Monks polished off the team's first victory – and first career coaching win for Head Coach Alexis Michal – with a dominant 25-15 third set triumph, which was punctuated with a kill from freshman Chatham Mills (Gorham, Maine).

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Senior Victoria Huntley (Ellsworth, Maine) enjoyed a terrific match with 12 kills, 15 digs, and a .282 attack percentage
  • Senior Shadai Gosselin (Somersworth, N.H.) added five kills, three aces, and 11 digs
  • Mills produced five kills with three block solos
  • Sophomore Jennelle Thompson (Farmington, N.H.) led the Monks with 17 digs
  • Junior Jordynne Copp (Cumberland, Maine) chipped in with five kills, five digs, and a pair of total blocks
  • Sophomores Sarah Dyer (Seabrook, N.H.) and Emma Tirrell (Scarborough, Maine) split setter duties and contributed 13 and 10 assists, respectively

LEADERS – LESLEY

  • Junior Kaylee Deluga (Dennis, Mass.) paced the Lynx with eight kills and 21 digs
  • Freshman Kelsey Dobbins (Henniker, N.H.) added five kills
  • Senior Vera Bednar (Helmond, Netherlands) totaled 10 assists with eight digs
  • Junior Anni Abbruzzese (Croton on Hudson, N.Y.) contributed four kills and 17 digs
  • Senior Jess Reynolds (Londonderry, N.H.) chipped in with 13 digs

TEAM STATS

Saint Joseph's held advantages in kills (33-23), assists (27-22), service aces (6-1), blocks (5-3), and attack percentage (.188 - .019) while Lesley owned a 66-63 lead in digs in the setback.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 8-3 in the history of the series with Lesley University, a team the Monks defeated by the same score in Cambridge last fall. Seven of the Monks' eight wins over the Lynx have been of the shutout variety.

NEXT!

Saint Joseph's is back in action on Tuesday night when the Monks play at University of New England in a 6:30 PM start. Lesley is off until next Saturday when the Lynx compete in a tri-match with Worcester State at Wentworth Institute.
