National Girls & Women in Sports Day - Erin Olson
NATIONAL GIRLS & WOMEN IN SPORTS DAY:

"February 3, 2021, marks the 35th Annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD). Every year, this celebration inspires girls and women to play and be active, to realize their full power. This year, with the COVID-19 pandemic, we recognize the importance of staying mentally and physically healthy during challenging times. Whether virtual or other, we invite you to safely celebrate NGWSD in your community and to join the Women's Sports Foundation as we Lead Her Forward in 2021." -www.womenssportsfoundation.org

Since we are unable to visit local schools or host a free sports clinic on campus this year, we hope to inspire young female athletes by sharing the stories of our current student-athletes. We posed the same five questions to members of our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and will feature their answers and photos every day during NGWSD week.

When did you realize you had a passion for your sport?

Summer after 7th Grade.
At what age did you start playing sports/your sport?
Summer after 7th grade I started playing volleyball. I played many other sports growing up since I was 5 yrs. old (skiing, soccer, gymnastics, skating, karate, basketball).
Did someone inspire you?
Yes, my 6th grade science teacher inspired me to start playing volleyball. He was the women's volleyball coach for my towns high school. He ran volleyball camps at the high school during the summers. He recommended that I try out volleyball and see if I liked it. Summer after 7th grade, my friends and I decided to give volleyball a shot. I had never touched a volleyball before this summer. He helped me learn the sport and I learned to love the sport. I continued to do his camps every summer throughout high school. He continued to help me when I transferred schools. He gave me information for other clinics to go to, club teams to try out for, came to tournaments, etc. He helped me find the sport I love and then how to be successful in the sport I love. He continues to show his support and come out to college games to support another former player of his (Hanna Holden) and I.
Who is your biggest fan?
My parents are my biggest fans! They have always supported me in each sport I have tried. They have made it a point that at least one of my parents (if not both) was always at a high school game or club game. This became more difficult when I went away to college; however, they continue to make a huge effort to be at almost every game. If they cannot physically be at a weekday game, they always live stream the game and put it on the tv, cheering me on from afar. After the game, they always send me a message or call me to talk about the game (win or lose) since they could not see/ talk to me in person.
Why do you play?
My why is to prove to myself that I can continuously work hard and push myself to be better for my team as well as for myself. I love volleyball and I love being able to have fun and be apart of a team. This sport has allowed me to grow as a person and a player. Volleyball is a huge reason I am the person I am today.
