Monks Hold Off Huskies, 3-1

STANDISH, Maine – Three players combined to belt 37 kills and lift Saint Joseph's College (7-12) past University of Southern Maine (4-11), 3-1 (25-19, 25-13, 21-25, 25-13) in a non-conference women's volleyball match at Mike McDevitt Court on Thursday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks posted perhaps their most complete performance of the season in the victory and held the lead for all but one service in each of the first two sets en route to recording convincing 25-19 and 25-13 wins.

The Huskies battled through three lead changes and five tie scores in a 25-21 third-set victory, a set during which the hosts committed eight attack errors and five service miscues. The Monks showed some mettle and clinched the victory with a dominant 25-13 fourth-set performance after posting a .306 attack rate with 15 kills – and just four errors – in 36 attempts.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held the lead in kills (52-23), attack percentage (.248-.008), assists (45-21), service aces (6-5) and digs (65-52) in the victory.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Freshman Victoria Briones (El Paso, Texas) tallied 14 kills, 15 digs, three aces and a .379 attack rate
  • Sophomore Maggie Sylvester (Barrington, N.H.) posted 12 kills and 17 digs with a .321 attack percentage
  • Freshman Nadia Sixto (Chattanooga, Tenn.) added 11 kills on 30 attempts
  • Senior Hanna Holden (Stoughton, Mass.) chipped in with three kills, 24 assists, and nine digs
  • Sophomore Hanna Webster (Alvin, Texas) contributed five kills, 10 assists, and 13 digs
  • Senior Amanda Darby (Shrewsbury, Mass.) recorded four kills, eight assists, and three digs

LEADERS – SOUTHERN MAINE:

  • Senior Sophia Lindsay (Sierra Madre, Calif.) notched six kills, 15 assists, and seven digs
  • Junior Meg Perry (Gorham, Maine) added six kills and 13 digs
  • Junior Sierra Castonguay (Nottingham, N.H.) chipped in with two aces and 16 digs

NEXT!

Saint Joseph's will face Regis College at Lasell University in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tri-match on Saturday. The Monks play Regis at 1:00 PM and take on Lasell at 3:00 PM.
