Nor'easters Top Monks, 124-60

BIDDEFORD, ME – The Saint Joseph's women's swim team suffered a 124-60 loss to University of New England on Monday afternoon. Hannah Gajewski '12 (Biddeford, ME/McAuley) notched two top-finishes in the individual medley events for the Monks.

Gajewski nearly broke her own program records with a 2:22.87 effort in the 200-IM and a 1:07.25 performance in the 100-IM. In the 100 IM, Gajewski edged UNE first-year Alex Gabriels (East Greenbush, N.Y.) by 0.09 seconds -- the closest finish of the day.

Christine Cote '13 (Biddeford, ME) also enjoyed a solid day with runner-up times in the 50-Free (27.83) and 100-Free (1:02.03) events. The Monks' 200-Medley relay team - featuring Anne Roberts '12 (Hopkinton, NH), Rose Maccarrone '12 (Hingham, MA), Meghan Carr '14 (Topsham, ME) and Cote - placed first with a 2:12.75 performance.

Jamie Wojtkiewicz '12 (Bedford, NH) placed second in 200-Free (2:14.14) and 500-Free (6:08.31) competitions and Rose Maccarrone '12 (Hingham, MA) finished third with a 1:22.01 time in the 100-Breast race.

Winners of six straight dual meets, the Nor'easters (6-1) received a pair of event victories from junior Lizzie Wareham (Osterville, Mass.) to lead the way. Wareham took both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races, posting times of 26.12 and 57.83, respectively.

For UNE, senior Sara Shea (Peabody, Mass.), sophomores Meaghan Arsenault (Methuen, Mass.) and Rachel Hanley (Wiscasset, Maine), and first-year Alexa Cheney (Mansfield, Conn.) each picked up a race victory. Shea claimed the 500-yard freestyle (5:56.33), Arsenault the 100-yard backstroke (106.72), Hanley the 100-yard breaststroke (1:20.06), and Cheney the 200-yard freestyle (2:11.94).

The two teams split the relay events of the afternoon.

The Nor'easters are back in the pool against Roger Williams University next Saturday (Jan. 22, 1 p.m.), while Saint Joseph's swims again the same day at Simmons College (1 p.m.).
