BANGOR, ME – Saint Joseph's College defeated Husson University, 143-109, in what was the 2011 season-opening swim meet for both teams on Saturday afternoon. Hannah Gajewski '12 (Biddeford, Maine/McAuley) won all three of her individual events and swam a leg for the winning 200-Free relay team in the triumph.

Gajewski opened with an easy victory in the 1000-Free – her 12:29.11 time was over two minutes faster than the effort posted by Husson first-year Sarah Klopp – and proceeded to win the 100-Breast (1:17.98) and 50-Fly (31.38) competitions.

Mandy Avella '15 (Londonderry, N.H.) performed quite well in her first NCAA action with a pair of victories, including a program-record breaking effort in the 50-Back (30.78). She also swam legs for both of the Monks' winning relay teams on the afternoon.

Avella's 50-Back time snapped the former mark, which was set by Lindsay D'Ascanio '11 versus Husson in 2009, by nearly two seconds.

Senior Jamie Wojtkiewicz (Bedford, N.H.) also enjoyed a banner day with top finishes in the 500-Free (6:08.67) and 200-Free (2:15.33) events and a runner-up effort in the 100-IM (1:11.14). She also swam a leg for the winning 200-Medley relay in the team triumph.

Christine Cote '13 (Biddeford, Maine) tallied wins in the 100-Free (1:01.74) and 50-Free (27.84) and Rose Maccarrone '12 (Hingham, Mass.) added a top finish in the 100-IM (1:11.02).

Avella, Gajewski and Maccarrone all achieved NEISDA A cut times in the 2011 season-opener.

Saint Joseph's will compete against Elms College on the road next Saturday at 1:00 PM.
