2022 SJC Athletics Senior Banquet

2022 SJC Athletics Senior Banquet

STANDISH, Maine - The 2022 Saint Joseph's College Athletics Senior Awards have been announced.

At the conclusion of each academic year, the Saint Joseph's Department of Athletics comes together to honor the numerous accomplishments achieved by the graduating class and, following an internal nomination and voting process, bestow awards upon deserving individuals for five distinguished honors: Female Athlete of the Year, Male Athlete of the Year, Father John Tokaz Award, Neile Nelson Award, and Chris Kiernan Award.

The Student-Athlete of the Year honorees – Eilidh Sidaway (W. Soccer) and Jacob Huberdeau (Cross Country / Track & Field) - are chosen by a selection committee, with criteria based on both academic and athletic achievement, within the department.

Each year, team grade-point averages are compiled to determine the Athletic Department's Team GPA Award recipients. For the second-consecutive year, the cross country teams swept the honor, as the women's squad posted a 3.78 collective GPA and the men's team registered a 3.76 mark during the 2021-22 academic year.

Held in-person for the first time since 2019, the Saint Joseph's Senior Athletic Awards Banquet was hosted at the Stone Barn on campus and catered by the SJC events department on the evening of Monday, May 9th.

FATHER JOHN TOKAZ AWARD: JAMESON COLLINS '17, HEAD STRENGTH & CONDITIONING COACH

Named for a great man who was the College Chaplain for nine years and was an ardent supporter of athletics during his time at Saint Joseph's, this honor is presented annually to the individual within the college community who has displayed extraordinary support of and assistance to the athletic department mission and to our student-athletes.

Baseball Head Coach Will Sanborn '86: "Coach Collins has been an incredible addition to our department and is truly deserving of the Father John Tokaz Award. Jamie puts in countless hours working with our teams and has developed an outstanding culture in the weight room. He has undoubtedly helped our athletes improve and prevent injuries and is a strong supporter of all our programs. I am thrilled to present Jamie Collins with this year's Father John Tokaz Award."

CHRIS KIERNAN AWARD: ALYSON FILLION, BASKETBALL

The Chris Kiernan Award is named after the college's first Director of Athletics and men's basketball coach who later also served as the Dean of Students and the Director of Admissions and Financial Aid. This award is presented to the student-athlete who has shown a consistent work ethic to develop as both a student and an athlete; who has displayed a strong commitment toward service of team and community and has proven a never quit attitude and the willingness to work through and overcome adversity.

Head Athletic Trainer/SWA Tiffany Miller-Gagnon: "Aly has had a great career here at SJC but had a very challenging senior year. On November 18th, Aly suffered a career ending knee injury. This was just the start. In the following months Aly would undergo multiple doctors' appointments, rehab appointments, surgery, and more rehab appointments. It is not uncommon for a student athlete, especially in their senior year, would shut down following an event like this. However, Aly did quite the opposite. Yes, these were trying times and yes, she had many pain-filled days, but she always had a smile on her face and exuded a positive attitude. She maintained her grades and her at-home rehab exercises while fulfilling her responsibilities as a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and the athletics event staff. As a women's basketball team captain, Aly served as a positive influence for the remainder of the season as the team advanced to the conference championship game."

"In my position I have seen many athletes struggle with a diagnosis like hers, but Aly took everything in stride and has come out a better person. Aly, you have made us all proud and it has been my pleasure to work with you over the last four years in many different arenas!"

NEILE NELSON AWARD: EMMA AUCLAIR, SOCCER

Presented annually to the student-athlete who has set an example by displaying a high level of commitment to his/her team while performing a leadership role within the Saint Joseph's College campus community. Neile was a standout two-sport athlete (soccer, basketball) at Saint Joseph's and garnered 1994 NCAA Maine Woman of the Year and Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors, All-America Scholar-Athlete accolades in 1993 and 1994, All-Northeast acclaim in 1992, 1993 and 1994 and All-Conference mention in each of her four years on the soccer field.

Corey McCarthy, Assoc. Director of Athletics: "Emma was the rare four-year intern who we really got to know well during her time in the sports information office. She's very smart and super creative and very conscientious with everything she does. Emma has really come out of her shell since her freshman year and undoubtedly one of the very best workers we've had in the sports info office. I know she'll go on to do great things, hopefully in college athletics!"

Soccer Coach Jenelle Harris: "Emma is a prime example of our program's values: commitment, competitive fire, accountability, and family. Emma is an amazing teammate and always puts her team first. She is always willing to help increase our program's presence on social media with graphics and a wide variety of videos. Emma has helped get Saint Joseph's College and our programs' name seen and she will greatly be missed. Good luck in your next chapter!"

NEILE NELSON AWARD: TROY HENDRICKS, CROSS COUNTRY / TRACK & FIELD

Director of Athletics: "Troy has been an intern with us for three years and – recognizing the fact that he works for almost every department on campus – is an extremely hard worker who is gifted creatively. He has a knack for solving problems and has really helped the sports information office improve in many ways, including our webcasts and graphic/video design output. We're very happy to know that Troy is sticking around for a couple years to pursue his masters and win multiple GNAC titles!"
