Beavers Capture Runnin’ Monks Crown

STANDISH, ME – University of Maine at Farmington claimed the Runnin' Monks Invitational team title for the fourth consecutive year with 41 points in the annual event hosted by Saint Joseph's College on Saturday.

Husson's Angela Stauble '11 (Amherst, NH) claimed the fourth individual crown of her senior campaign with a 20:36 effort in the meet. Two UMF runners, Caitlin Miller '13 (Pepperell, MA) and Salena Sykes '13 (Island Pond, VT), were the next two runners to cross the finish line with 21:13 and 21:19 performances, respectively, in the 5K race.

Saint Joseph's finished as the runner-up with 70 points, edging third-place Johnson & Wales University, which also tallied 70 points on the day. The Monks earned the victory by tiebreaker, which compares the sixth runner for each team. SJC junior Allison Pearsall (West Newbury, MA) finished eight seconds ahead of JWU rookie Aubrey Francis (Baldwinsville, NY) in the 34th and 35th positions, respectively, to account for the second and third place breakdown.

Husson (86 points), Lyndon State (109), Lasell (117) and Rivier (188) rounded out the qualifying teams. University of Maine at Presque participated, but did not have enough runners to score.

For St. Joe's, Danielle Cusack '13 (Portland, ME/Deering) placed fifth with a 21:32 effort, while Katie Murphy '11 (Baileyville, ME) finished 11th with a 22:25 performance. Christina Meehan '11 (Nashua, NH) (15th, 22:48), Laura Mills '13 (Mattapoisett, MA) (23:19) and Ashley Condon '13 (Sumner, ME) (20th, 23:24) closed out the top five finishers for the Monks.

The eighth-annual Runnin Monks Invitational turned out to be one of the largest fields in the history of the event, as 54 women and 59 men competed in the two races.

Saint Joseph's will compete in the Maine State Championship meet, hosted by Bowdoin College, on Saturday, October 16th. The women's event begins at 11:00 AM with the men to follow at 12:00 PM.
