Nor'easters Hold Off Monks 3-1

Saint Joseph's College (1-2) was defeated by the University of New England (3-0) on November 24th at the Harold Alfond Forum by a score of 3-1. The Nor'easters struck first just over ten minutes into the first stanza on a goal from Phil Young. The University of New England's Sean Powers notched the second goal of the game on a pass from Greg Lodge with 8:26 remaining in the first to go ahead 2-0. The Monks had five shots on goal in the period, but were unable to find the back of the net and the first period concluded. The Nor'easter's remained on top 2-0.

The second period was evenly matched and each team had a number of scoring chances. A number of the University of New England's scoring opportunities came when the Monks were down 5 on 3 for just over a minute and a half, but the Nor'easters were unable to put one past sophomore netminder Jimmy Riley (Dedham, Mass.) who made 44 saves in the contest. As the period continued, both goaltenders stood strong and neither team was able to put one in the net.

In the final period of the game, the Monks battled back and sophomore Mario Lemieux (Biddeford, Maine) dished a pass to sophomore Ryan Berard (Millville, Mass.) who fired a shot passed the Nor'easter's goaltender for his fifth goal of the season to narrow the Nor'easters' lead to one with 10:29 remaining. Unfortunately for the Monks, the Nor'easters extended their lead to 3-1 when Greg Lodge put one passed Riley on a pass from Sam Cloutier with 7:19 remaining. The score remained at 3-1 for the remainder of the contest and the Monks, despite having 19 shots on net, faced their second loss of the season.

Saint Joseph's faces off tonight against Southern Maine Community College at 8:30pm at Bridgton Academy Ice Arena in Bridgton, Maine.
