Monks Surge Past Seawolves 11-5

The Saint Joseph's College Monks (2-2) trounced the Southern Maine Community College Seawolves (0-1) on Tuesday night by a score of 11 to 5. The Monks netted the first goal of the contest at 13:32 when sophomore Mario Lemieux (Biddeford, Maine) directed a pass from sophomore Ryan Berard (Millville, Mass.) past the Seawolves goaltender, Chris Derrah. The Seawolves answered just over a minute later when Devin Lyshon put the puck past Monks goaltender Jimmy Riley (Dedham, Mass.) from the short side. Zack Fyler (South Hiram, Maine) tallied another for the Monks at 8:22 and Tom Crawford (Westbrook, Maine) scored his first collegiate goal at 7:05 to elevate the score to 3 to 1. The Seawolves brought it back within one when a Saint Joseph's defender deflected an errant pass into the net. Southern Maine Community College's Andrew Hackett was credited with the shorthanded goal. Before time expired, however, Lemieux put another one past Derrah to bring the score to 4 to 2 in favor of the Monks.

The Seawolves struck first during the second stanza on a breakaway goal scored by Jacob Doing, bringing the score to 4 to 3. At the 6-minute marker, the Seawolves made a goaltending change and Owen Kimmel entered the game. Derrah made 25 saves during his 24-minute stint. The Monks scored three times within the last five minutes of the period, including Mario Lemieux's third goal of the game. Goals from Dan Donovan (Lynn, Mass.), freshman Sean Costa (Burlington, Mass.), Lemieux, and first year Brandon Ward (Houlton, Maine) put the Monks on top 7 to 3 entering the final stanza.

Just 54 seconds into the third period, Hackett put another past Riley and narrowed the score to 7 to 4. The Seawolves stuck again at 9:31 on Hackett's third goal of the night. The Monks went on to score four unanswered goals in the final minutes of the game. The first came at 3:52 on a shot from Ward assisted by freshman Billy Cooke (Pelham, NH). Donovan netted the next goal with assists credited to Ward, and senior Colin Finn (North Easton, Mass.). Max Gouveia (North, Reading Mass.) then notched his first collegiate goal, which assisted by Crawford and Paulo Lopes (Gloucester, Mass.). Senior Mat Gordon (Auburn, Maine) scored the final goal of the contest with under ten seconds remaining.

Seawolves netminder, Owen Kimmel, made 19 stops during his time in the game, while Riley made 20 stops in the contest. The Monks will travel to Bates College on Thursday, January 16, 2014 for their next contest. The puck drops at 7:00pm at Underhill Arena in Lewiston, Maine.
